With Nelson Mandela Day coming up this week, people across the world will be taking time to celebrate the great man who dedicated his life to the freedom of our nation. With our day to day lives sometimes being chaotic, it's important to remember why this day is worth celebrating and what we can do to contribute to the Mandela legacy.
Why we celebrate
Nelson Mandela Day is a global celebration of the life and work of Nelson Mandela. The day was established by the United Nations in November 2009 with the first official Nelson Mandela Day being celebrated on 18 July 2010. While this is not an official public holiday, it has been allocated as a day to remember the legacy of Mandela and often individuals and companies alike take time to support CSI and CSR initiatives. The day is a reminder to all that each individual has the power to transform the world and make a difference even if only a small change is made.
Doing our bit!
During Mandela Day, each person is encouraged to participate in making a difference in the world around them. The Homes of Distinction family will be at Hearts of Hope, bringing donations and helping to transform the playground for the children there. Here are a few ideas on how you can do your bit:
1. Donate money or the following goods to Hearts of Hope, dropping your donation off at our offices:
Size 5 disposable nappies
Floor cleaner
Rubbish bags
Tinned spaghetti, baked beans, sweetcorn and pilchards
2. Volunteer at a local animal shelter or childrens' home
3. Clean up litter in a local park #TrashTagChallenge
4. Donate to a worthy cause close to your heart
5. Join a volunteer group
