Nothing is more eye-catching or up-lifting than the sight of brightly coloured flowering plants in your garden, or on your patio, especially in the cold, and sometimes grey and gloomy days of our winter.
Nurseries are open during Lockdown Level 4, so head to your local garden nursery and make your choice from their many flora offerings.
If colour and variety is what you want, and currently lack, then consider the following:
For White, Pink or Purple Colours
- Camellia: a largish, shade-loving, evergreen shrub, blooms are large, round, with single or double layers of petals, some have crinkled edges, in shades of white, pink, or red.
- Azalea: a shade-loving, evergreen shrub, sizes vary from 30cm to 2m, in shades of pale pink, cherry red, coral and magenta.
- Petunia: ideal for pots, hanging baskets or planted en masse on borders in full sun, long flowering and traditionally in shades of white, pink or purple.
- Alyssum: a low maintenance bedding plant, also ideal for hanging baskets or containers, long flowering, full sun, shades of white, pink and purples.
For Orange and Yellow Shades
- Namaqualand Daisy: a wonderful bedding plant ideal if planted en masse in full sun where they flower prolifically in a riot of bright oranges and yellows.
- Calendula: is a daisy-like flower in showy orange and yellow, likes full or partial sun, ideal in containers and borders, but best planted en masse in flower beds.
For Red, Orange, Purple Shades
- Nandina: a non-flowering, upright shrub, Varietion range from 0.8 m to 3m tall, full sun or shade, ideal for colour as its leaves change to shades of red, orange and purple in autumn and winter.
For a Mix of Shades
- Pansy: who can resist these with their little faces, their multitude of bright, striking colours and colour mixes, ideal in hanging baskets, containers, flower beds, in winter sunshine.
- Vygie: is waterwise, ideal in full sun in rockeries, flower beds, hanging baskets, containers, patios or driveways or as a groundcover, with brilliantly bright and mixed coloured flowers.
