Prepare Your Garden for Autumn

Category Gardening

Soon enough, the leaves will begin to change colour and the weather will turn colder. Before these changes take place, it's important to know how to prepare your garden for the upcoming autumn. Here are seven tips to start preparing your garden now and ensure that it has a successful seasonal transition.

1. Move herbs indoors:

Many herbs are delicate plants by nature, especially if they are grown in containers and have limited space to grow freely. Move any potted herbs indoors or to a sheltered, warm, and bright area to ensure they won't be damaged by the cold.

2. Feed the soil & Mulch:

Add compost or an organic fertilizer to your garden soil to give it the boost it will need for the upcoming cold season. During the growing periods of spring and summer, soil becomes depleted of nutrients. By adding a slow release fertilizer to the soil, your plants will be fed throughout autumn and winter and give you a kick start to your feeding your plants come spring. Mulching with cut grass or straw will help to retain the moisture in the soil over the dry periods.

3. Harvest seeds:

If you have a food garden, autumn is the perfect time to start harvesting seeds for the next growing season. Fruits and pods which have been allowed to ripen and even over-ripen on the plant will produce mature seeds perfect for planting when spring arrives.

4. Check trees for damage:

Damaged tree branches can cause a world of problems if they are not properly removed. As the leaves fall from the trees in your garden, inspect your trees and take note of any damaged or dead branches which could become hazardous. Ensure that these are removed properly and safely from your garden.

5. Tidy borders:

Inspect the borders of your flower beds and remove any weak, damaged, or diseased plants. You can add these to your compost pile to create a nutrient rich fertilizer for spring or simply discard them. If your garden looks a little bare, invest in planting some winter friendly blooms such as violas, pansies, and snapdragons.

6. Plant bulbs and other longer germinating plants:

Bulb plants such as tulips, lilies, and irises require long germination periods with bright light and cool soil. Planning out your bulbs during autumn will allow them the time and temperature they require do a successful blooming season during the following spring.

7. Remember to feed the birds:

Food sources become scarce during autumn and winter for many birds. By installing a few bird feeders in your garden during autumn and topping them up over the next few months, wild bird life will start associating your garden with an abundant source of food and will encourage them to visit throughout the colder months.

Regardless of what type of garden you have in your home, a little planning and foresight to your garden can lead to a successful dormant and growing season in 2019.
