What smells? How to Get Rid of Bad Smells in the Home

Category Home Tips And Tricks

When it comes to our homes, and even our cars, bad smells can make being in them very unpleasant. With a large variety of things that can start to smell bad in our homes, a wide range of harsh chemical cleaning products are available to help sort out the smell.  But at what cost to your health? Read here for the 5 most common bad home smells and how to get rid of the smell of natural products.

The Pet Smells:

We all love our furry family members but every now and then, they can start to stink, and not just the fur. If there has been an accident on the carpet or furniture, sprinkling the area with a little baking soda will absorb the smell quickly. A quick vacuum will then get rid of the soda and the smell will be gone. If the smell is coming from a kitty-litter box, give the container a thorough wash with warm soapy water and vinegar.

The Smelly Dustbin:

It’s no surprise that a dustbin can start to smell bad, it’s where we dispose of food and rubbish. You can avoid the smells from haunting your kitchen by simply placing some old newspaper at the bottom of the dustbin before inserting the bag to absorb food juices. You can also throw in some lemon skins, without any lemon fruit flesh, to help keep your bin lemony fresh.

The Funny Fridge Smell:

Our refrigerators keep our food fresh, so when they start to develop a funny smell, our food can be affected as well. To get rid of funny or bad smells in the fridge, put some bicarbonate of soda in a bowl or Tupperware container and place it in the fridge. Bicarbonate of soda will help to absorb the smell and keep your fridge fresh. Make sure to give your fridge a good clean every few months to avoid funny smells in the first place.

The Drain Smell:

One of the worst smells that can waft through your home may be coming from your drains. Whether it’s the kitchen sink, bath, bathroom basin, or even toilet, you can use this method to break up trapped grime and leave your drain odour free. Spoon some baking soda down the drain and pour in some white spirit vinegar, and let the combination work its magic for a little while. Finally, flush it through the pipes with some boiling water.

The Musty Smell:

A musty smell is usually caused by mould and mildew when something has been left damp for a while. Sort these smells out quickly by spraying the area with a tea tree oil solution. This will fight off the smell and kill off any remaining mould or spores that are still present.

A bad smell can make any place uncomfortable to be in, and your home should not be a place you want to avoid. Keep your home fresh and clean with wholesome natural products that save you money and keep your home healthy and free of harsh chemicals.
