What to do in JHB if you don't travel this December

Category News

Joburger's are an amazing bunch of people! We work hard and we know how to play hard, and when the time of year to take a break rolls around, many Johannesburg residents feel they need to head down to the coastlines to enjoy some fun in the sun. The truth is, in Joburg, we already have the sun, and we sure do have plenty of fun for the festive season! Here are our four picks of fun activities to enjoy this holiday season in and around the City of Gold.

1. The Cradle of Humankind:
Take a step through time and see where our history began with a trip to the Cradle of Humankind, Johannesburg's favourite World Heritage Site. The area offers a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy, from walking with the evolving fossils of our past to experiencing the vibrant cultures of today. The Cradle of Humankind has something for everyone and is not only educational but immensely enjoyable as well. Visit their website and discover what they have on offer this festive season: http://ow.ly/OfQz30mMBz0.

2. The Rhino and Lion Park:
It's no secret, we have some of the most fantastic indigenous species of animals in our stunning country, and in Joburg, we are lucky enough to have a large variety of them. Nestled right next to the Cradle of Humankind, the Rhino and Lion Park is an obvious choice for a game drive to view our awesome wildlife. You can also snap some great pictures for your Christmas cards with a variety of photo-ops available for kids and adults alike. Have a look at their website here for more information: http://ow.ly/5NDc30mMBTw.

3. Bungee Jumping at the Soweto Towers:
For those with an adventurous spirit and a taste for adrenaline, take a trip to the Soweto Orlando Towers which have recently been painted by local artists. The towers offer adrenaline junkies the thrills they are looking for with the bungee jump being the world's highest scad free fall, while they also offer wall climbing, and paintball too. 4. A Walk Through Newtown:
Take a walk through the fast developing artistic and cultural hub of Gauteng on a guided walking tour with Jozi Jammin'. Have a look at the growth and gentrification taking place in the city we call home and feel how the art, culture, and history of our country has been pulled together. With secured underground parking readily available, the walking tour will start and end in Newtown, with plenty of stops for delicious refreshments and decadent cuisine available. For more information, have a look at the Jozi Jammin' Facebook page here: http://ow.ly/AKtc30mQ3uv.

5. Christmas Fairs, Festivals, and Markets:
With the festive season fast approaching, there is no shortage of flea markets, Christmas fairs and festivals for you to enjoy. All around our City of Gold will be dozens of events for the whole family to enjoy and take part in. The best way to find some of these lovely functions is to check out the upcoming events on your favourite Facebook pages to find the ideal event for you on a day you have available.
Here are some of the markets and fairs that have caught our eye:
  • The Christmas Village at Montecasino on December 12th
  • Christmas Night Market at The Fourways Farmers Market on December 7th
  • Market at The Pretoria Zoo on December 14th
  • Market on the Square at Nelson Mandela Square on December 16th

With so many folk heading away for this season, why not stay here and enjoy the peaceful city of Johannesburg or look for one of our hometown's activities for a fun adventure.
