5 indigenous plants to plant now for spring

Category Gardening

Your garden needs some help getting back in shape, though, so it’s time to get the supplies from the home improvement store, pull out the tools from the shed and get to work planting these five beautiful and easy-to- grow indigenous spring plants.

Clivias
Indigenous Clivia will perform well planted in the garden or in containers in a shady spot and normally flower from the end of August through September. Clivias do not tolerate full sun, although they can enjoy some early morning light. Plants under trees or against an east-facing wall.

Mackaya Bella
The indigenous Mackaya Bella, also known as the forest bell bush, will grow in total shade and are perfect for right up against the boundary where they will form a solid screen blocking out walls or neighbours. Growing just over two meters round, they flower each spring to early summer with white tinged lilac flowers and flower in bunches, making quite a spectacular show each year.

Gazanias
Gazania species are grown for their brilliant colours in the late spring and are often in bloom throughout the summer well into autumn. The ultimate water-wise and environmental warrior plant, Gazanias will also attract butterflies and bees to the garden and thrive on a little neglect. Gazania plant care does not involve much other than watering.

Blue Felicia
Covering in flowers in early spring and flowering right through most of summer nothing quite puts on a show of true blue flowers such as the Felicia. There are a few different varieties but all grow about the size of a soccer ball and are perfect fillers in the full sun border.

The Golden Euryops
This plant is an excellent garden subject and has been available in nurseries for many years. It is fast growing and flowers freely, provided it is planted in a full sun position. It is completely frost hardy and as such is ideal for the Highveld garden. It makes an excellent shrub border or mixed perennial backdrop.

The urge to garden in early spring is primal. Re-connecting with the earth is affirming, renewing, promising. Waking up the garden to a new growing season is about more than soil and seedlings… this rite of spring is a tonic to the gardener as well.

Recent studies have shown that gardening is literally good for you, reducing stress, keeping you mentally sharp, and helping you to sleep better.  Not that we needed an excuse to get dirty and make pretty!
