DIY vs. Contractor

Category Home Tips And Tricks

When it comes to renovating your home, a question which many will find themselves asking is this: “Do I really need to hire a contractor?” While some small tasks around the home can be taken on yourself, there are certain renovations that should be taken on by a trained professional. Many capable men and women can work their way around DIY projects such as installing new handles on kitchen cabinets or updating a light fixture, but just because the option of DIY seems available, does not mean you should try it yourself.

Here are the three big questions you need to ask yourself before you try your hand at any DIY vs Contractor project you may have.

Safety:

Safety should always be a primary concern when you consider taking on a renovation project by yourself. While many jobs have a certain level of safety concerns, there are a few which should be seriously considered and even completely left to the skills of a trained professional. There are three signs that a particular project should be handled professionally:

1. Could the project seriously injure or even kill you? Projects involving roof repairs, tree felling and electrical work should not be taken on as DIY.

2. Could it damage your home in the long term? This is especially true for roofing and plumbing projects where if it’s not handled by a trained roofer or plumber, a slow leak could result in damp, mould, and a weakened home structure.

3. Does the repair require a particular set of skills? Any home renovations which could be done by someone with a certification should definitely be left in the hands of a contractor who is qualified to get the job done correctly.

Difficulty:

This question is simple enough, do you really know how to do the job? Fixing a leak in a faulty pipe or tiling a bathroom floor may seem simple to do yourself when you begin, but these tasks require more skill than they seem. If the task falls out of your skillset, hiring a contractor to tackle the project will save you a lot of time, money, and frustration.

Time:

This is a little more complicated to figure out but the jist is to ask yourself whether or not the time you save on using an experienced and reliable contractor is worth more to you than the money you’ll save doing it yourself. Depending on whether your time or your money is limited will determine which is the best solution for you, but if you’re limited to how long you can have your home in a state of a DIY workshop, a contractor will probably be the best choice for you.
While DIY may save you money, hiring a contractor will limit the number of mistakes made in the process and leave your home looking beautifully done with professional results.
