Retro Interior Design - By Bruce Rayne

Category Interior Design

Oh the good old days, how often do we think that?

Believe it or not, the designs we loved way back in the day have slowly been making a resurgence with the best elements re-incorporated into today's modern and most sought after designs, and we call this retro.

The retro interior is both loud and playful, colourful and filled with beautiful geometric patterns. The style spans a few decades of interior design history, taking the best elements and leaving behind the worst mistakes.

So, how can you achieve the funky, playful retro interior design in your home or even your office?

Colour
Colour, colour, colour. It's the easiest way to send a shout out to the 50's, 60's and 70's. Avocado greens, mustard yellows, sky blues, as well as oranges, reds, purples, and pinks are some of the most popular colours to incorporate a retro feeling into your space.

Retro Elements
Making use of line and unexpected materials in your furniture is another throwback to previous decades. When looking at a retro-fitted room, you may find yourself wondering if all these elements were meant to be incorporated as each seems to be vying for your attention. The truth is that each piece should stand out and have its own spotlight but still remain comfortable and functional.

Large Prints
During the age of intellectual and social enlightenment, walls were covered in large and intriguing prints to draw attention to the room and showcase specific interests. Large prints are still in as the wall space is a large canvas with myriad creative interior possibilities.

Diversity in Design
One of my favourite things about retro is its simple diversity. You can tip your cap to the era by using one, two, or 100 inspirations and its loud and proud voice will always shine through. Many styles come to our attention but seem to fade just as quickly, but retro is not one of these and will be loved for decades to come.
