Spectacles fogging over with your mask up? Try these simple hacks

Category News

There's no denying that in the past two years, so many things have changed with new norms quickly being adopted by all. One particular change to how we experience daily living is having to wear masks whenever we go out in public.

Although most people have quickly adapted, spectacle wearers all-round are experiencing a new unique frustration... misty glasses, and obscured vision!

In order to tackle this irritating new phenomenon, glasses-wearers have been trying all sorts of tricks to keep their vision clear and uninterrupted. Ahead, we list our top five quick and easy methods to keep your eyes on the prize and your spectacles mist-free.

Simple soap and water

We're pretty sure (or at least we hope) that you have access to both in your home!

Immediately before wearing a mask, quickly rinse your glasses under lukewarm water, apply the soapy water, and then either gently rub off any excess water or, better yet, leave them to air dry. This simple yet effective trick should help keep your glasses fresh and clear of fog for at least an hour.

Use a microfiber cloth to gently dry your specs and be careful with water temperature. If the water is too hot, you could cause bubbling of the anti-glare film or worse... crack your lenses!

NB! - although hand sanitiser is in high stock and demand, we would recommend against using it. Hand sanitisers come in a variety of different chemical make-ups and strengths that could potentially damage your lens. Rather avoid it if possible and instead buy a recommended cleaning solution from your local pharmacy.

Place a tissue on the underside of your mask

It just so happens that tissue paper has a specific design mesh that makes it perfect for capturing moisture from your breath. This effective trick only requires you to place one single folded sheet of either paper across the top of your mask to cover your nose. This creates a nice anti-fog layer thanks to their high absorbance.

You can even try this trick with toilet paper if you have no tissues on hand! However, just be sure that it's soft or two-ply!

Use shaving cream

No... really! You would be surprised at the effectiveness of this unassuming skincare product. That's right! Regular shaving cream for both men and women from your local supermarket not only helps keep your mirrors clear after a shower but also has the same anti-fogging effect on your glasses too.

The trick is to lather up a small amount onto your lenses and gently wipe off with a micro-fibre cloth until clean. Not only does shaving cream demystify your vision, but will keep them clear for a good few hours of use. Try it yourself!

Positioning is key

While nifty life hacks are definitely effective at keeping your glasses clear of mist, the position is also key!

If you're wearing a regular disposable paper mask then take a closer look at the top lining and you should notice that there is a fine metal wire keeping it straight. Once your mask is securely on your face, pinch the top middle part where the wire is around your nose bridge (This creates a small air cavity). Gently shift your glasses lower down your nose to allow for more ventilation and you're practically good to go.

Special types of masks you can buy

If you take a look at the market in 2021, masks have quickly become an unwitting fashion accessory. That being said, plenty of mask designs are now incorporating anti-fog features for spectacle wearers all over the world.
