The Secret to Good Hosting: A Beginners Guide

Category Home Tips And Tricks

Hosting a games night, dinner party, braai, or simple get together can be a daunting task, especially if your home and hosting skill set isn't quite up to scratch. Here are a few guidelines to help first-time hosts find their feet and get ready to impress their guests.

Give your guests a choice
Choice is what keeps our lives interesting so giving your guests the gift of choice will help to make your event, gathering, or visit much more enjoyable. Provide your guests with a selection of different teas, coffees, and juice options and let them decide what they're in the mood for. Not only will they enjoy visiting you more, but the visit will be most memorable.

Prepare your home
Nothing boasts a person who has everything under control like a clean, well put together home. Before your guests arrive, ensure that each room is ready for visitors. In the kitchen, wipe down the countertops and clean the dishes, or load them into your dishwasher and make sure any rogue condiments have been packed away. Make sure there is toilet paper, hand soap and hand lotion ready in the bathroom and the hand towels are clean. Ensure there's nothing cluttering up your floors and all the beds have been made in the house.

5 Adulting Hacks for first timers
Acquiring the nuances of adulthood can be a difficult adventure, with some of us taking many years to achieve... That's why we have gathered these five hacks for budding adults to fake it till they make it.

1. Have a few LIVING pot plants
A healthy pot plant can do wonders for your decor, breathing, and prove to your guests your ability to be responsible.

2. Have bottles of water on hand
This isn't to say that you need to invest in cases of bottled water, which isn't only expensive but also hazardous to the environment. Simply wash and refill your used water bottles and keep them in the fridge, ready to impress your guests.

3. Have a cheese platter ready
Few things will say sophistication and maturity better than a cheese platter. Either create your own or buy a premade pack from the shops ready for your guests.  Place one knife for each cheese on the board to ensure that the cheese flavours are not mixed during cutting.

4. Have a selection of wine
Red or white? Sweet or dry? Everyone has their own preference in wine so it's a good idea to have a few different types on hand for a variety of pallets.

5. Set out the fancy things for your guests
This isn't to say you need fine china or crystal cut tumblers for your guests, but laying out a nice table cloth and offering linen napkins at a braai will go a long way in impressing your guests.

Whether you're looking to up your game in hosting or learn from scratch, these fundamentals will go a long way in raising your hosting credit.
