Viola (Violaceae)

Category Gardening

Violas are among the favourite flowers for many gardeners as they come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colours. Their asymmetrical faces will bring a delightful flare to any garden! Here is why we have given violas their own spotlight this week.

  • Violas are among the easiest flowers to care for and can be a fun activity to grow from seed and then transplant in the garden with children.
  • They prefer cooler weather and will bloom during autumn and spring, sometimes continuing to flower through winter in warmer climates.
  • They are usually annual blooms but some varieties may be perennials and are self-seeding.
  • Violas enjoy rich, well-draining soil with a fair amount of moisture and organic matter to grow in.
  • They need to be watered regularly but enjoy their soil to be allowed to dry in between waterings.
  • Violas prefer full sun but don’t enjoy the heat that comes with this position, use mulch to help survive the hot summer days.
  • Violas can have a longer flowering period so long as failing and limp blooms are deadheaded regularly.
  • Violas are relatively resistant to pests, however, they can be susceptible to aphids and powdery mildew.
  • Violas can become particularly leggy during the warm summer months, but being cut back will help with vibrant blooms when the flowering season arrives.
  • Violas are famously available in every colour and almost every pattern possible.
  • This pollinator-friendly flower is perfect for edges, bedding, containers, baskets, and balconies.
  • The edible flowers are often used in salads, cakes, cocktails and can be candied for decor. They also contain anthocyanins and cyclotides which have antiviral properties, help to heal sore throats and deter insects.

There’s little doubt that violas are a stunning flower to grow and enjoy in your garden this spring. They certainly have deserved their title as the most popular flower for every type of garden. These frost resistant pretty plants will definitely bring tons of colour to your garden no matter where you plant them.
