The Best Grasses for Your Lawn
There’s nothing better in a garden than a healthy green lawn. Lawns provide a place for the kids to play in the sunshine and pets to run around for exercise. But not all grasses are equal meaning not all lawns are equal. Different types of grass need different sun and water conditions, so here are the best types of grass for a lawn in Gauteng.
Bermuda Grass
Bermuda is a grass that requires total sun so any shade over the lawn areas will cause patches. Bermuda is an indigenous grass that tolerates a lot of traffic; it’s commonly used on golf courses, sports fields, parks and homes.
Black Jack Grass
This is a genetically modified grass between Bermuda and Gulf Green making it a softer grass which doesn’t require a lot of water.
Buffalo Grass
Buffalo (also called LM grass) is a very common lawn in South Africa. Buffalo lawn is a great choice for shaded areas because of its high shade tolerance. Buffalo lawns grow slowly and are therefore low maintenance.
Gulf Green Grass
This grass is a deep green colour and incredible soft as far as grasses go, an indigenous species perfect for small areas.
Kikuyu
Kikuyu is the most common and most affordable lawn grass. Kikuyu lawn requires full sun so in shaded areas the lawn will thin or die out in winter. Kikuyu grows very fast and requires mowing every week.
