Top ten beach hacks

Category News

The holidays are here and you are off to the beach! But a beach holiday can go south quickly when sunburn hits, there is sand everywhere, and everyone is hot. But with our list of handy hacks, your can streamline your day in the sun and keep it all fun fun fun.

1. Put your cellphone in a Ziploc sandwich bag - the touchscreen will still work but it will be protected from sand, sun, and water.

2. Use baby powder to remove sand from skin quickly and easily. Baby powder removes moisture from your skin allowing the sand to basically fall off your hair, feet, legs, etc.

3. Freeze your water and juice bottles instead of bringing ice packs to keep your snacks cool. Your water will be extra cold for hours, and you’ll keep your snacks fresh, too. Or freeze water balloons filled with water to pack into your cooler. After they’ve thawed completely, have a water balloon fight!

4. Save plastic jars to store your phone and keys in while you’re at the beach - if you want to hide these while you go for a dip, dig a hole under your towel and pop it in there for safe keeping.

5. Take an inflatable kiddie pool to keep babies and tots safely corralled at the beach, or make your own kiddie pool by digging a hole, lining it with a cheap shower curtain, and filling it with water.

6. Use a fitted sheet and lift the corners with bags, coolers, etc. to keep the sand at bay.

7. A mesh laundry bag is the perfect container for the beach! It sifts the sand, leaving it at the beach instead of trailing it into your car and home.

8. Keep some chilled green tea in a spray bottle to refresh skin, and freeze some aloe vera into cubes in case you get sunburn.

9. Speaking of sunscreen, use a marker to write down the times you need to reapply sunscreen ON the bottle - you should apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and apply liberally; reapply the same amount every two hours. Also chill your sunscreen and keep it in the cooler. That way, when you apply (and reapply), you'll help to cool down your body, too.

10. Bring plenty of packets - although they're not good for the environment, carrying plastic bags to the beach will ensure you have somewhere to collect your trash before you put it in the garbage, plus you can collect pretty shells easily while walking.

Remember to bring along any medications you or your family need, such as asthma inhalers, spare antihistamines, as well as a first aid kit. Wet wipes will never go amiss, and neither will extra towels, lip balm, or snacks (especially as you can count on the kids making friends!). Many beaches now offer umbrella and chair rental, which is especially useful when you are travelling to the coast. Now kick back, relax, and work on that tan!
