Herb Gardens - Potted vs. Planted

Category Gardening

A herb garden is a great addition to any home and serves as a great hobby as well as a way to save costs for the avid cooks among us. While there are many choices to be made such as what herbs will you plant, the first decision is whether you want a potted or planted herb garden. Here are a few things to consider:

Planted

Pros:
Bigger space to work with limited only by garden size.
Direct sunlight during the day.
Less mess.

Cons:
Your herbs are susceptible to the elements.
Herbs may be exposed to extreme temperatures.
Herbs are an open target to bugs and birds who enjoy eating herbs.

Potted

Pros:
You will have more control over the elements and pest your herbs will be exposed to.
Herbs can easily be moved inside or outside at will.
Herbs can sit in the kitchen and be easily reached for cooking.

Cons:
Less space to work with.
Fewer herbs available for cooking.
Herbs are usually smaller.
Herbs may not receive enough sunlight.

There are benefits to both approaches and both will be highly rewarding. It's up to you, in the end, to decide on the option that works for you and your living space.
