Plant of the week: Blue Honeybell Bush (Freylinia Tropica)

Category Gardening

This week’s plant of choice goes to the Blue Honeybell bush without question. This beautiful and versatile plant made our radar and instantly became a gardening favourite. With so many great aspects of this plant, you won’t be surprised why we love it, so here is why the Blue Honeybell bush won its spot as our plant of the week.
The Blue Honeybell bush is an indigenous plant to South Africa.

It is an evergreen plant allowing your garden to keep colour all year round.

It can either grow into a large tree or be easily pruned into a shrub.

The Blue Honeybell bush requires either full sun or semi shade, making it easy to choose a location in your garden.

It is tolerant of frost so no coverings required during the winter months.

It is a hardy plant that requires low to medium amounts of water, making it a fairly water-wise plant.

The Blue Honeybell bush grows relatively quickly compared to most trees and shrubs.

It attracts a multitude of pollinators including bees and butterflies, helping to keep your garden healthy.

It will flower for half the year, during the spring and summer months.

The Blue Honeybell bush can produce small blue, lilac, or white flowers.

A low maintenance plant that requires pruning usually during the autumn months.

For landscaping purposes, the Blue Honeybell bush can be trimmed into a lollipop shape or mass planted as a hedge.

Having an indigenous garden doesn’t mean it can’t be full of colour and look like the wild. Plants such as the Blue Honeybell bush provide colour and a je ne sais quoi that is absolutely delightful to have in your garden. Your garden will also be a lot more water-wise and hardy.
